About this Converter

Convert mixed numbers, fractions or integers to decimal numbers.

This online calculator will convert a mixed number to an improper fraction, reduce that fraction if it can be reduced, then perform the division of the numerator by the denominator to find the decimal equivalent of the mixed number.  You can enter mixed numbers, fractions or integers.

How to convert a mixed number to a decimal

A mixed number such as 7 1/4 can be converted to a decimal.  It is implied that 7 1/4 is really 7 + 1/4 and that 7 = 7/1 therefore we are first adding the fraction 7/1 + 1/4.  Since 4 is the denominator original fraction part we will use it as our common denominator.  7/1 * 4/4 = 28/4.  Then, 28/4 + 1/4 = 29/4.  29/4 is 29 ÷ 4 = 7.25.

7 1/4 = 7/1 + 1/4 = 28/4 + 1/4 = 29/4 = 29 ÷ 4 = 7.25

As you may have noticed, 7.25 is just the whole part of 7 1/4 added to 1 ÷ 4 = 0.25.  This is certainly another valid approach to converting mixed numbers to decimals.  Just be careful of mixed numbers that contain improper fractional parts.  For example, 7 5/4 can be converted in 2 different ways:

7 5/4 = 7/1 + 5/4 = 28/4 + 5/4 = 33/4 = 33 ÷ 4 = 8.25, or

7 5/4 = 7 + (5 ÷ 4) = 7 + 1.25 = 8.25
