How to Convert Hours to Days

One day has twenty-four hours so one hour is one twenty-fourth of a day. Days equals hours times one day per twenty-four hours or, days = hours × 1 day/24 hours. The simple way to remember this conversion is to divide by 24

To convert hours to days, divide hours by 24.

Days = Hours ÷ 24

Formula

Days equals hours divided by hours per day. \[ \text{days} = \dfrac{\text{hours}}{\text{hours per day}} \]

Mathematically, converting say 3 hours to days, we write our equation with units that will convert to days.

3 hours ÷ 24 hours per day = 3 hr ÷ 24 hr/d

Divide 3 by 24, cancel out the hours, and we are left with days

3 hr ÷ 24 hr/d = 0.125 d

Convert Hours to Work Days

Use this calculator to calculate work days or how many days it will take to complete a project or task. For example, if you worked 37.5 hours and a work day is equal to 7.5 hours enter 37.5 hours and 1 day = 7.5 hours. The calculator will divide 37.5 ÷ 7.5 = 5. So, 37.5 hours equals 5 days of work time. As another example, say you have a project you can work on 5 hours every day. How many days will it take to finish a project that will require 110 hours to complete? Enter 110 hours with 1 day = 5 hours and the calculator will divide 110 h ÷ 5 h/d = 22 d. Your project will take 22 days to complete.

Convert Hours to Planetary Days

Let's say there is an event that will last 12,345 hours. How many days will the event last on Earth? How many days will the event last on the planet Mercury? Since one day on Earth is 24 hours, 12,345 h ÷ 24 h/d = 514 d. Into the calculator, enter 12,345 for hours and 1 day = 24 hours. Since one rotation of Mercury takes 1,408 hours, enter 12,345 hours and 1 day = 1,408 hours. Then, 12,345 h ÷ 1,408 h/d = 9 d. The same event wall last only 9 days on Mercury.

Even though the days are different, the number of hours the event lasts is exactly the same.

Hour

An hour is a unit of time. The symbol for hour is h and is often abbreviated hr in everyday usage. Relating hours to other units of time 1 hour = 60 minutes = 3600 seconds = 1/24 day = 0.0416 days. Hours is abbreviated hh when used as part the format of time used worldwide hh:mm:ss. It indicates hours expressed in two digits from 00 to 12 for a twelve hour clock or 00 to 24 for a twenty-four hour clock. mm is minutes and ss is seconds.

Day

A day is a unit of time. The symbol for day, and its abbreviation, are both d although it seems to be rarely used in commmon practice since day is only three letters. A day is generally the time of one rotation of the Earth which is equal to about 23.9 hours but we calculate time using 24 hours. Leap years are used to make up the difference. Note that for other planets, a day for that planet is also the time of one rotation of that planet. The length of a day on other planets is different that earth. Relating days to other units of time 1 day = 24 hours = 1440 minutes = 86,400 seconds. Days is sometimes included in time format as days:hh:mm:ss where hh is hours and mm is minutes and ss is seconds.

Hours to Days Chart of Common Conversions

Example:

Convert 7.25 hours to days.

7.25 hr ÷ 24 hr/d

= 7.25 hr ÷ 24 hr/d

= 0.302083 days

Convert 7.25 hours to minutes.

7.25 hr × 60 min/hr

= 7.25 hr × 60 min/hr

= 435 minutes

Convert 7.25 hours to seconds.

7.25 hr × 3,600 sec/hr

= 7.25 hr × 3,600 sec/hr

= 26,100 seconds
