Grade Calculator
Use this Grade Calculator to find your course grade as a weighted average of assignments, evaluations and exams.
Input your score for each graded assignment, test or exam. Then enter the weight of each grade as a percentage of your final course grade.
How to Calculate Grade
The grade calculator computes your course grade for the semester, quarter, or term as a weighted average using these steps:
- Divide each weight percentage by 100 to get a decimal weight
- Multiply your grade on each assignment or test by its decimal weight
- Add up all of the weighted products from step 2
- Add up all the decimal weights from step 1
- Divide the sum of weighted products by the sum of the decimal weights
Note that in calculating grades by weight, totaling the weights for the entire semester or term should add up to 100 percent of your course grade. But you can still use this calculator throughout the semester by including only those assessments that have been graded.
The Weighted Grade Formula
You can write out the formula to find your weighted grade like this:
Weighted Grade =
sum of (score × weight) ÷ sum of weights
Read this formula as, "Your weighted grade equals the sum of each score multiplied by its weight, divided by the sum of all the weights."
What is a Grade Calculator?
An online grade calculator is a digital tool that calculates your course grade by weight percentage. This can help predict your final grade so you can strategize how you'll study for remaining course assignments and exams.
Using a grade calculator eliminates the guesswork so you can see exactly how you're doing in a class. You can also use the calculator to try "what if" scenarios and see what you need to score on future assignments and tests to hit your target grade.
How to Calculate Grade as a Weighted Average
Grade calculators are typically based on weighted averages. In most high school and college courses all assignments don't count the same. For example your course grade may be calculated like this:
- Homework counts for 20%
- Quizzes count for 10%
- The midterm counts for 30%
- The final exam counts for 40%
Each of these course elements contributes a percentage to your final grade. The grade calculator multiplies your score in each category by its respective weight and sums them to compute your course grade.
Example Grade Calculation
Say you're approaching your final exam in a course. You currently have:
- 85% on homework, weighted as 20% of your grade
- 90% on quizzes, 10%
- 78% on the midterm, 30%
- TBD on the final exam, 40%
Use the weighted average formula to calculate your current grade by hand. First, convert each percent to a decimal, then multiply by the matching grade.
Weighted Average = sum of (score × weight) / sum of weights
Course grade = (85 × 0.20) + (90 × 0.10) + (78 × 0.30)
= 17 + 9 + 23.4
= 49.4 out of 0.60 total
= 49.4 / 0.60
= 82.33%
Your grade so far is 82.33% with the final exam making up the remaining 40% of your grade.
You can try "what if" scenarios to see how your final exam grade will impact your course grade. Say you get a 90% on the final. What would your course grade be?
Course grade = (85 × 0.20) + (90 × 0.10) + (78 × 0.30) + (90 × 0.40)
= 17 + 9 + 23.4 + 36
= 85.4
So getting a score of 90% on your final will pull you up from a B- to a solid B as your weighted average grade in the course.
Why Use a Grade Calculator?
Whether you're in high school, college, or a graduate program, a grade calculator computes your current grade for any course at any point in the semester.
Track your course progress in real time. Instead of waiting for your instructor to calculate grades throughout the term you can track your own progress.
Reduce anxiety. Are you worried about passing the final? Input your current grades and find out what you need to score on upcoming exams to pass or ace the class.
Make informed decisions. Should you focus more on a term paper or a quiz? A grade calculator shows where you can make the biggest impact by focusing your study time.
Set smart goals. Set GPA or letter-grade goals, then reverse-calculate what scores you’ll need to hit them.
When is a Grade Calculator Most Helpful?
You can use a grade calculator throughout a quarter or semester. This will help you keep tabs on your performance in the course. A grade calculator will be especially useful in these scenarios:
- Before a big test: Want to know what score you need on your final to get an A? A calculator lets you test different final exam outcomes.
- Mid-semester evaluations: Trying to decide whether to drop a class or stick it out? Use the grade calculator to see where you stand in the course.
- GPA Planning: Are you trying to maintain honors, a scholarship, or athletic eligibility? Calculate whether your current grades will get you there.
- Group Project Strategy: If part of your course includes teamwork, you can assess how group grades affect your individual results — and how much to compensate for others underperforming.
Letter Grade to Percent Conversion
There are no precise rules regarding letter grade to numeric range equivalents since they vary by school or university. The chart below represents generally accepted numeric equivalents of letter grades.
If you choose to input letter grades, the grade calculator uses the midpoint of each percentage range to calculate course grades. If your school uses a different scale, input your known grade percentage rather than letter grade when you input your scores in the calculator.
| Letter Grade | Percentage Range | Midpoint Value |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 97-100 | 98.5 |
| A | 93-96 | 94.5 |
| A- | 90-92 | 91 |
| B+ | 87-89 | 88 |
| B | 83-86 | 84.5 |
| B- | 80-82 | 81 |
| C+ | 77-79 | 78 |
| C | 73-76 | 74.5 |
| C- | 70-72 | 71 |
| D+ | 67-69 | 68 |
| D | 63-66 | 64.5 |
| D- | 60-62 | 61 |
| F | 0-59 | 0 |
