Comparing Fractions:

To compare fractions or mixed numbers this calculator first turns mixed numbers into improper fractions, finds the least common denominator (LCD), converts the fractions to equivelant fractions using the LCD, then compares the numerators for equality.

Example:

Let's compare 5/6 and 3/8.

Find the LCD. The multiples of 6 are 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, ... and the multiples of 8 are 8, 16, 24, 32, ... The least commen multiple, and therefore the least common denominator, is 24.

Rewrite each fraction as an equivilant fraction using the LCD. For 5/6, 24/6 = 4 so (4 * 5)/(4*6) = 20/24. For 3/8, 24/8 = 3 so (3 * 3)/(3 * 8) = 9/24.

Comparing 20/24 and 9/24, 20/24 > 9/24 so 5/6 > 3/8.
