Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn't military time use a colon?

Military time omits the colon to prevent misreading and save space in communications. Write 1430, not 14:30. Not writing the colon is quicker and can avoid confusion among writing styles.

What's the difference between military time and 24-hour time?

Both use the same hours (0000-2359), but military time omits the colon (1430) while 24-hour civilian time includes it (14:30). Adding the colon improves readability.

How do I say military time out loud?

Common pronunciations:

  • 0000 = "zero hundred hours" (midnight)
  • 0700 = "zero seven hundred"
  • 0915 = "zero nine fifteen"
  • 1200 = "twelve hundred" (noon)
  • 1430 = "fourteen thirty"
  • 2005 = "twenty zero five"
  • 2359 = "twenty-three fifty-nine"

Remember: Never say "thousand" - 1000 is "ten hundred," not "one thousand." In formal military settings, use "zero" not "oh" and add "hours" at the end.
Is midnight 0000 or 2400?

Midnight is 0000 at the start of a new day. While 2400 can indicate the end of a day, 0000 is standard.

What about seconds in military time?

Seconds are written after the minutes: 143052 = 14 hours, 30 minutes, 52 seconds (2:30:52 PM).

Do I need to write all four digits?

Yes, always use four digits. Write 0800, not 800. Leading zeros are required for times before 1000.

Quick conversion trick?

To convert to PM times, subtract 1200 from any time above 1259 and add the PM. For example: 1325 - 1200 = 1:25 PM, 1900 - 1200 = 7:00 PM.

Do all branches of the military use the same time format?

Yes. All US military branches (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Space Force) use the same military time format.

Military Minutes Chart

Military minutes are the same as decimal minutes. Convert to decimal minutes by dividing any number of minutes by 60.

For example, to find how many military (or decimal) minutes are equal to 10 regular clock minutes, do the math for 10 divided by 60. The answer is 0.1667, and rounding to 2 decimal places makes it 0.17 military minutes.

If you need more accuracy than 2 decimal places, be sure to do the math on your own rather than referring to the Military Minutes Chart below.

Use the Time to Decimal Calculator to automatically convert minutes to decimal minutes carried out to 4 decimal places. Your inputs should go in the minutes mm field to convert only minutes.
